Contour Animal Paintings
The 4th grade students had learned about contour lines earlier in the year, looking at the artist Pablo Picasso. We then discussed how you can draw anything out of one line. Students were shown various types of animals to draw using contour lines. They then practiced a blind contour exercise where they could not lift their pencil up off their paper or look at their paper while drawing their image! Needless to say the results were hysterical! Students were then free to draw an animal of their choice incorporating contour lines into the drawing. They then painted their animal in warm or cool colors, painting the background the opposite color family. Then they outlined their pencil marks in black glue.
